Radiohead Closing In On Deal For 'In Rainbows' CD

Radiohead is closing in on a deal for the physical release of its new album, "In Rainbows," sources tell Billboard. A band spokesperson said earlier this week that the album, which will be available for download Oct. 10 via Radiohead.com, would not be released widely on CD until 2008, but Billboard understands that timetable may move forward.

Radiohead.com is also offering a "discbox" with "In Rainbows" on CD and vinyl. The package will ship "on or before Dec. 3," according to the site.

ATO is seen as the front-runner and potentially most attractive home for Radiohead, who recorded for EMI until 2005, for numerous reasons. For one, Phil Costello, Capitol's former senior VP of promotion and marketing, is now at ATO.

Further, Red Light Management has just launched a new offshoot label, Side One Recordings, in conjunction with ATO (Red Light owner/founder Coran Capshaw is also a co-founder/co-owner of ATO). The label's first release is veteran U.K. electronica duo Underworld's "Oblivion With Bells," due Oct. 16.

Most ATO releases have been distributed in the U.S. by RCA, although some went through RED. The Nov. 13 release of David Gray's "Greatest Hits" will mark the debut release by ATO as a fully independent, RED-distributed label. Side One Recordings is also distributed by RED.

EMI is also angling to re-establish ties with Radiohead. The group's six studio albums for the company have sold a combined 8.5 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Another likely suitor is Warner Bros., which has been after Radiohead dating back to when the band was still affiliated with EMI. Perry Watts-Russell, who was senior VP of A&R at Capitol during Radiohead's tenure, is now in the same position at Warner Bros.

The company has lately enjoyed success distributing artist-run labels like Jack White's Third Man, to which the White Stripes are signed. The Stripes' latest album, "Icky Thump," has sold 603,000 copies.

There was some speculation Radiohead would not sign a new deal with a label at all, but group managers Chris Hufford and Bryce Edge told BBC Radio today (Oct. 4) that it was a necessary step.

"The band think they [are] incredibly proud of this record and feel that it deserves to be brought into the mass marketplace," Hufford said. "That's why we need a record company who have that infrastructure to deliver the CD."

An ATO/Red Light/Side One Recordings spokesperson declined to comment. Radiohead's publicist says the band has not yet made a decision on a label partner.

NIRVANA's 'Unplugged' Finally Heading To DVD

Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com reports that NIRVANA's November 18, 1993 "MTV Unplugged" taping will make its DVD debut November 20 via Universal Music Enterprises. "MTV Unplugged in New York" was released Nov. 1, 1994, on CD, the first NIRVANA product to appear following Kurt Cobain's suicide that April.

Like the CD, the DVD will include the songs "Something in the Way" and "Oh Me", which did not appear on the original MTV broadcast. The DVD also sports four tracks from the band's soundcheck and previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage.

IRON MAIDEN World Tour To Kick Off In January?

According to MaidenFans.com, IRON MAIDEN drummer drummer Nicko McBrain has told the Swedish newspaper Expressen that the band's next world tour will start in January 2008, with a mention of a show at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, at some point during the summer. However, as Nicko has been known to say a lot of things before they're officially confirmed, consider this a rumor for the time being.

As previously reported, MAIDEN is rumored to planning a tour of South America in February, with alleged concert stops to include Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.

IRON MAIDEN is confirmed for next year's Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place July 31 - August 2, 2008 in Wacken, Germany.

IRON MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson announced from the stage at this year's Download festival, which took place June 8-10 at Donington Park, Leicestershire, England, that the group's performance was being filmed for an upcoming DVD.

As a grand finale to their festival/stadium summer tour, IRON MAIDEN performed a special one-off show at London's Brixton Academy on June 24 in aid of The Clive Burr MS Trust fund. This was IRON MAIDEN's final U.K. appearance for at least a year, and was the last time they performed this year's special setlist of songs from their latest album "A Matter of Life and Death" and the LP "The Number of the Beast".

ROB ZOMBIE: New 'Halloween' Trailer Available

A brand new official trailer for Rob Zombie's latest film, an adaptation of the 1978 horror classic "Halloween", has been posted at Yahoo! Movies. Alternately, you can view the clip below.

Zombie recently commented on the reports that he has quietly gone about shooting new material for "Halloween", including a brand new ending for the film. According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, Zombie spent a week shooting additional scenes of "violence, gore and bloodshed," including six new death sequences and the new finale, which was described as "quite gruesome." Sources told Launch that the additional scenes were shot as a result of audience response to a test screening of the film's initial cut that was held in June.

Said Zombie: "Dimension [Films] let me go film a couple new things that I thought the film needed and that's what I did. This is a good thing, so don't go worrying that something has gone wrong. The film still opens August 31 and kicks total ass. 'Nuff said."

"Halloween" is Zombie's third effort as a screenwriter and feature director.

Zombie is preparing a live album for release in August and is also said to be working on a box set from his previous band, WHITE ZOMBIE.

FOO FIGHTERS - THE PRETENDER

Only 58 seconds..

Adler Holding Out Hope For Guns N' Roses Reunion

With the big "Appetite For Destruction" 20th anniversary show behind him, original Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler is looking forward to taking his Adler's Appetite band worldwide. But he's also holding out hope for a blowout reunion bash with his former bandmates.

"I believe I made it this far for some reason," Adler tells Billboard.com. "I want to finish what we started, and ... with the love and support I got from those guys, I think we can (reunite). I'm gonna leave it up to Axl [Rose]. That's gonna be Axl's call, and I love Axl and I know he'll make the right call."

At Saturday's (July 28th) show at West Hollywood's Key Club, Adler and company were joined by Gunners Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, while guitarist Slash watched a few songs before leaving for a prior commitment. The group is next headed to South America for a series of shows in Argentina, Peru and Chile before returning home to play the Vegas Rocks magazine party on Aug. 11 in Las Vegas. More dates in South America and Europe are in the offing.

"We're gonna be busy working until pretty much Christmas, which I'm excited about," he says. "I love playing live, especially for people who love the music and appreciate it and show nothing but love to me and respect. I love it, and I give it all back."

Adler started Appetite about six years ago, but it's become a more serious concern during the past year, since he got sober and put together a lineup that includes Enuff Z'Nuff bassist Chip Z'Nuff, guitarists Michael Thomas from Faster Pussycat and Kristy "Krash" Majors frrom Pretty Boy Floyd, and singer Colby Veil from the GNR tribute band Hollywood Roses. "There's only one Axl," Z'nuff notes, "but (Veil) comes close, and all the Guns N' Roses guys love him."

The Key Club show was filmed and recorded for a possible release, and the Adler's Appetite members are also writing songs with plans to record and release an album in 2008. "I think we can make a great record," says Z'Nuff, adding that all of Adler's GNR bandmates have expressed interest in playing on it. "It takes a little while to make a great record and to get all them great players to come down and play."

AC/DC Goes Digital Via Verizon Wireless

AC/DC is finally selling its music digitally. But not on iTunes. Verizon Wireless has snagged the exclusive rights to sell the band's entire back catalog through March 2008, becoming the first and only digital music store to offer the Australian combo's content.

However, the deal is limited to full-album downloads, one of the reason's AC/DC's music has not appeared in digital form to date. Since full album downloads are too large and too expensive to sell from mobile phones, Verizon is only selling them from the PC version of its VCast Music service for $12 an album.

The only exception is the group's biggest hit, "You Shook Me All Night Long," which will be available as an over-the-air download.

Additionally, Verizon has also gained the rights to sell ringtones and ringback tones of 18 new tracks not available from other operators. The company also plans to broadcast AC/DC's "Live at Donnington" concert and other performances via the VCast TV service. Unlike on-demand mobile video services, the VCast TV service allows users to tune into scheduled programming much like regular TV.

According to Ed Ruth, associate director of music of programming and sponsorships, Verizon hopes to add performances by other artists to the VCast TV channel over time. "This is an indicator of things to come," he says.

AC/DC is also at work on a new studio album, due sometime in 2008, with a tour to follow.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD – New Record In Early ’08?

LYNYRD SKYNYRD and BLACKFOOT legend Rickey Medlocke sat down with BW&BK before a sold-out show in Niagara Falls to talk music, and not just old music but some fresh stuff for those hot Southern nights…

“The main thing is we've been writing new material, from last fall through the winter, and in some downtime, getting ready for a new CD, for the first of the year,” begins Rickey. “Plus this tour… we’re out all the way through the end of October this year, which is a pretty long run. We started back in the beginning of April, and it's been a pretty long run for us this year. We'll see how it goes. We're really excited about getting back into getting something together because it's been four years since we've had a new record out. So everybody's really excited about that. Myself, I've been recording some new material on my own, and am looking at maybe putting something out on the market here, hopefully within this year, something like that; I’ve got a ton of songs I’ve stockpiled, writing, getting those recorded, doing my thing. Other than that, we've got some film projects that I'm looking at, a television thing and a movie thing right now. So as far as the acting goes, that's continuing; I'm always looking at that. But yeah, things are good right now, things are fine.”

Under the solo situation, would it be under the Rickey Medlocke banner, or within a band situation?

“Well, it would be under Rickey Medlocke. Really, I've come far enough in my career that I'm not sure about getting a band together and calling it a band. Maybe, I'm not really sure, but right now, it's in the early stages to where I’ve got some commitments from some really good other personalities to come in and record, and do some things on the record. So right now I'm just pursuing it as a Rickey Medlocke thing and we’ll see where it goes.”

“It's pretty heavy blues rock,” answers Medlocke, asked where it might go stylistically. “I mean, it's nothing like, what would you say, any departure away from anything in the past, except the songs are really, really good. I've been writing with some really good writers, as has Skynyrd, some of the same writers. A guy named Gordon Kennedy, who wrote ‘If I Could Change The World’ with ERIC CLAPTON, a guy named Trey Bruce, who's been working with VELVET REVOLVER, JOHN 5 who plays with ROB ZOMBIE. Just different people like that. A guy named JEFFREY STEELE, a lot of different people. Song-wise, man, I'm really excited about it because it's right up my alley except it's good material, man. Material like I haven't done in a long time.”

“I think Skynyrd is at a pivotal point right now where, first of all, we need a new record,” says Medlocke, in closing. “And we're looking at a couple of really good packages next year, for next year's touring. But I think right now, one of the most important things for Lynyrd Skynyrd is to get a new record out and have new product.”

Pete Doherty issues desperate lovers plea

He goes public this week in a bid to win back his ex

Pete Doherty has gone to the tabloids to get a message to his former love Kate Moss - saying he can't live without her.

THe couple's tumultuous relationship came to a sudden end earlier this month when tabloid reports surfaced claiming the Babyshambles singer had been unfaithful to the supermodel with at least one other woman. However, Doherty vehemently denies the allegations, and says he's desperate for Kate to come back into his life.

He tells the Mirror in an interview, "I can't get hold of her any other way. I need Kate to know that I still love her. She has broken my heart. Take me back. Kate if you love me then realise I don't want any other girl. I'm here to tell her that I love her."

Doherty described Moss as a "nasty old rag" who "kicked me in the head" in his account of their off-on relationship, but says reports of him cheating on a South African model were false.

"We fell out for the same old reason. She accused me of f****** this girl who lives around the corner. "She's got an awful temper. I grabbed my guitar and books and said 'I'm never going to be treated this way again'."

"Everything is different this time postrehab," he adds. "I've never been in a position before where I've actually made a record I can listen to and get off on. Kate was determined to sort her life out and has done. All she wants is to be a good mum for her kid."

The Hives come out with fighting talk

"We said we were only gonna make three records and then quit. But we're just too good at what we do...as long as there's no band that's better than us we just have to continue" - Chris Dangerous

Sound Generator's Matt Sheret managed to catch The Hives' Chris Dangerous for a few words on the patio outside of Hoxton Bar and Kitchen before their show last week. The intense drummer talked about recording the new album and all things Hives, while sporting the bands new look: Black school-uniform style blazers with black and white striped ties and H embroidered emblems.

How have you been the last few days Chris?
It's been great, a bit turbulent though..

Why's that?
Our sound guy called in sick about two hours after he was supposed to be here. We got a dude who'd great, but we had to make about 500 telephone calls to get him.

Wow. Has it been that kind of mad dash throughout the last couple of days?
Throughout the last six months actually.

Why did you choose to play the play these low-key gigs here and at the 100 Club as opposed to Brixton Academy or somewhere that size?
It's kind of nice here isn't it? Besides we've played Brixton Academy three times. It's good you know, we'll got our clothes worn in and it's a chance to play some show that will be remembered as some great fucking shows.

Every report that came from last night was just smiles and excitement
Yeah, that was sort-of the idea!

So is everything done and recorded now or is this testing out that new material?
No no no, we've been recording for a long fucking time, so we've got songs enough to make a triple CD. But we're mixing it at the moment. We've got monitors set up at the hotel so we can listen to mixes all the time and quickly get feedback to the label America, so there will be a record and it will probably be out in October.

Tyrannosaurus Hives was out on Interscope too, was it weird jumping to the majors?
No, I mean we got fucked by our previous label, so now we know we're dealing with people who like to make money and they don't pretend that they're not. plus they're great people and they obviously like our band a great deal, so I don't really see a downside. There's no such thing as independent music to me. There used to be but I don't think there is anymore.

What do you mean by that?
I guess I mean that we're the kind of band that never expected to become anything and never expected to make money or be able to not have a [day] job and stuff... Of course there are indie bands and stuff, but it doesn't fucking matter to me at all, as long as it's good, you know? As long as it's good it's good, and you can release it on your mom's label or Universal Music, it doesn't matter.

So, back to the new album, what was the approach to this one? I know you've recorded around the world now.
Yeah, well, we've been everywhere but I guess the first records that we did we had a very definite plan for them, and we also said we were only gonna make three records and then quit. But we're just too fucking good at what we do, no band has beaten us, so as long as there's no band that's better than us at what we do we just have to continue. So this record is us just doing everything we got offered to do. We worked with Pharrell Williams because he told us he wanted to in Japan four years ago so we said "Let's do it! Let's get produced, let's record in America with a bunch of different guys and see what comes out of it." We're sort of opening up a bit, I guess, to what we're interested in, people we're interested in."

You've got a reputation for lives shows that are chaotic, and vicious, and exciting, was that ever something you deliberately decided you'd do?
Yeah, yeah, I mean when we started playing in the 90s grunge had been a big thing, and I cannot even invent a more boring live set than watching people in ugly clothes staring at their feet and trying to look hurt. Fuck it, I've got better things do do with my time than that. Music is supposed to make an impression on people...

(Chris pauses here for 8 seconds that, in the hubub of Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, seem an eternity. When he starts talking again he has a look so intense I thought he might punch me. Instead he says...)

It's supposed to be a show, that's what it's supposed to be, you're supposed to feel like you've been blown away, you're supposed to feel like you've been beaten up, that's what it's supposed to feel like. That's how we want people to feel like when they walk out from one of our show. We're entertainers. That's what we do.

KORN Frontman: 'Our Hats Are Off To DEVO'

Launch Radio Networks reports: KORN issues its untitled eighth studio album on Tuesday (July 31), marking the group's first release as a trio. The band has also hinted that the new CD represents a major musical progression for the band, just as 2005's "See You on the Other Side" did. Guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer described the record and said where he thought it fits into KORN's catalog. "This record's very musical for KORN," he said. "Very gothic, musical. It's gonna take listeners a little bit of time to let it sink in, but I think they're really gonna love it. In the KORN catalog, I think I would compare it more to, like, our album 'Untouchables'."

"Untouchables", KORN's fifth album, was released in 2002.

The new disc was recorded without original drummer David Silveria, who took a temporary leave of absence from the band last December. Terry Bozzio, Brooks Wackerman and KORN singer Jonathan Davis all contributed drum tracks to the set.

KORN will hold a press conference in New York City's Times Square on Tuesday to announce plans for working with the USO and initiatives to make this summer's Family Values tour more eco-friendly.

The band will perform a free show on Tuesday evening at New York's South Street Seaport to celebrate the release of the new album. More details can be found at jr.com/korn.

The Family Values tour, which also features EVANESCENCE, HELLYEAH, FLYLEAF, ATREYU, TRIVIUM and others in addition to headliners KORN, makes its next stop in Buffalo, New York on Friday (August 3).

Jonathan Davis also responded to DEVO member Jerry Casale's accusation that KORN ripped off DEVO's "de-evolution" concept for a web site called EvolutionDevolution.com that promoted KORN's new "Evolution" video. Davis told RollingStone.com, "KORN never claimed to be the first to expose De-Evolution, our hats are off to DEVO for that...we are glad to see that our efforts have them speaking up again! It's good to have them back."

CHRIS CORNELL Talks SOUNDGARDEN

Patrick Douglas of The Culture Shock recently conducted an interview with former AUDIOSLAVE/SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

The Culture Shock: I saw you with AUDIOSLAVE a couple of times and the last one was during the leg where you were incorporating some SOUNDGARDEN songs into it. How invigorating is it for you to be able to go into a set list now and, like you said, go into any point in your career and say "I'm gonna pull this song out tonight?"

Cornell: It's pretty great. The only constraints have literally been time. We were just in New York and we were doing a lot of shows that were festivals and we didn't have soundchecks and I like to do long soundchecks. I don't care. Like two hours sometimes. That's kind of where we'll get to literally go in and start learning songs from my back catalog. And we haven't had a lot of that. We haven't actually been able to add songs as quickly as I would like to. I keep going online and getting collections of all the song titles from all the records and I just go through them because there's so many of them ‘cause I forget songs and fans will sometimes say "I wish you would play that," and I'm like "Yeah, that'd be great." And we don't know it yet. Soundchecks have become rehearsals where we have to rehearse … because we know so many songs now, we have to rehearse some of them that we haven't played in awhile so we don't forget them. Then we have to dig up some new things and get through those and then we have new songs to perform. Part of me feels like I could go out on a tour and do something … I've seen ELVIS COSTELLO do this sort of ATTRACTIONS-type tour where he would go out and play nothing but songs from the first two albums, which is pretty much stripped down, punk rock ELVIS COSTELLO and then I've seen him on tours where it's literally the opposite of that. I have the ability to totally do that. I'm not doing that now. Now, it's just kind of from beginning to end, it's just incorporating as much as I can of the different fields of songs that I've done over the years and trying to make that fit into two hours and make some sense.

The Culture Shock: People are starting to look back at the early '90s rock movement the way people looked back at the '70s bands back then. In the movie "Singles", Cliff is venting and saying, "Where is the 'Smoke on the Water'? Where is the 'Misty Mountain Hop'?" It's kind of ironic because the next great movement was actually happening around him, literally. How do you look back and reflect on those days when you were in SOUNDGARDEN and the world's rock and roll eyes became transfixed on you and your band?

Cornell: I think of it as being really exciting, really chaotic, kind of terrifying. There's a lot, I think, that we had to prove. That I had to prove, especially. From the time SOUNDGARDEN started, we got this type of encouragement that included "You guys can be the future of rock music. You guys can be, ten years from now, the kind of band that's selling out stadiums. You guys can be the future of rock." We didn't assemble as a band to do that. So it was sort of like this new idea and suddenly it became, not just SOUNDGARDEN, but all of our friends and their bands too. Then suddenly, it was sort of accepted worldwide, which is an insane thing because it all happened to us simultaneously. But then it was also sort of cynically possible that really it's all happening because you're all doing it at the same time. It's all happening because you're all together and you're all from the same place. Not because you're a great band or because you can write great songs and can make great records. As much as it was an exciting period, it was also a really huge proving ground where we had to go in and make great records and prove that it wasn't that we were just part of a fad and that's why people buy our records. It's because we're talented songwriters and a great rock band. And we did that. I think a lot of people think that if you're successful as a recording artist, it's over. You've achieved what you've spent your whole life to do, but really it's kind of a beginning. I look at that period as being pretty stressful, pretty crazy, but also pretty exciting.

Led Zeppelin Readies Fall Reissue Bonanza

Led Zeppelin fans will have a lot to celebrate this fall thanks to the release of three new titles in multiple configurations. First up on Nov. 13 via Atlantic/Rhino is a two-disc, 24-track best-of, "Mothership." A deluxe reissue of the soundtrack to the 1976 concert film "The Song Remains the Same" with previously unreleased material and a new DVD edition of that movie will arrive Nov. 20 via Atlantic/Rhino and Warner Home Video, respectively.

"Mothership," tracks for which were chosen by surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, represents all eight of the band's studio albums. In addition to a two-disc set, the album will also be available in both "deluxe" and "collector's" editions with a DVD featuring varied live content from the previously released "Led Zeppelin DVD." A 4-LP vinyl package will also be sold.

As for the "The Song Remains the Same" soundtrack, it now sports six songs not included on the original album: "Black Dog," "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Since I've Been Loving You," "The Ocean" and "Heartbreaker." The album and film were recorded during a July 1973 stand at New York's Madison Square Garden.

"The Song Remains the Same" DVD includes all 14 songs from the original concert for the first time plus previously unreleased performances of "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Celebration Day," "The Ocean" and "Misty Mountain Hop." Rounding out the bonus items are a 1976 BBC interview with Plant and band manager Peter Grant and contemporary footage from the robbery at New York's Drake Hotel during the MSG run.

Beyond a standard DVD, the film will be sold in both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats, as well as a limited collector's edition that includes the soundtrack, a T-shirt with the original album art and reproductions of memorabilia from the era.

All the catalog activity gives further heft to rumors Plant, Page and Jones will reunite to perform at a proposed Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert this fall in London. Eagles Prepping New Studio Album, Tour

The Eagles are planning to take flight with a long-awaited new album and a tour. Guitarist Joe Walsh tells Billboard.com that the album -- the Eagles' first full-length studio set since "The Long Run" in 1979 -- is "almost out. We're just finishing vocals and mixing it. We're all finally signing off on it."

Walsh says that all of the band members -- himself, Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Timothy B. Schmit -- wrote songs for the album, which he says "go in some really, really new, different directions. It's hard to compare to anything that I hear out there now." For his songs, however, Walsh "went rock'n’roll," including one "extended" track with "a middle full of guitar statement" and another that's "full-on rock'n'roll. I didn't want us to be too ballad-y here. We need some stuff we can play live, so I made sure there was that element in the record."

Walsh says the band, which took this year off the road to hunker down on the album, plans to tour extensively in 2008.

The guitarist is hardly sitting at home, however. Though he's put the James Gang on ice until he has more time to dedicate to it, he's playing 13 solo shows in the next month, beginning tonight (July 31) in Saratoga, Calif. Walsh has recruited a band of well-credentialed young players such as Gia Ciambotti (Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams) and Drew Hester (Lisa Marie Presley, Foo Fighters), who he says "are really kicking me in the pants."

"I love the energy and the attitude of a younger band, especially on stage," Walsh says. "I'm less cautious and less ... professional, I guess. I just like to rock'n'roll, and they're making me want to do it more."

Walsh adds that he's jonesing a bit to do some solo recording again but, not surprisingly, says, "I don't think I would cancel being an Eagle and resurface with a solo career. I love being in the Eagles, and we're not really done yet."

VAN HALEN SECURE EAST COAST REHEARSAL SPACE

I know there is maximum interest out there in hearing any positive Van Halen news, so here's just a little bit. The band's 2007 tour plans are on track and I hear that everyone is doing just fine. There is good health and good harmony within the band!
Now - what I heard today was that the band has secured an East Coast venue for a weeks worth of rehearsals...and this popular venue could be the starting point for the tour. The timing of this is stated as late September/early October.
No update on the timing of an announcement, but it cannot be far off!

METALLICA's ULRICH: We Made 'Some Kind Of Monster' Movie To Piss KERRY KING Off

Britain's Metal Hammer magazine (web site) recently conducted an exlusive interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich about the progress of the recording sessions for the group's new album, among other topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Metal Hammer: You've already recorded the drum, guitar and bass tracks for the new album, with the rest to be added some time in August.

Lars: "The backing tracks are done, yeah. But Rick [Rubin, producer] likes to keep things organic and work in a way that can be described as 'of the moment.' If we continue in August we should be done by October."

Metal Hammer: Rubin isn't known for being to giving with his time. What role has he played in the sessions?

Lars: "He's been there every single day so far. He's all about the big picture. He doesn't analyze things like drum tempos or tell James [Hetfield] to play something in F sharp. He's more about the feel: is everyone playing together? Rick's a vibe guy."

Metal Hammer: And is it okay for Rick to tell you something you've done sucks?

Lars: "Absolutely. And, believe me, he does. There's not a lot of gray with him. He really speaks his mind. Either something's great or something sucks."

Metal Hammer: How easy was it to can Bob Rock?

Lars: [Frowing]: "That's not a term I'd like to use. We'd been making records together for almost 20 years. That's as creative a relationship as you can come up with in music, film...just about anything. But it had got to a point where we would both finish each other's sentences. We needed to look somewhere else for our own sanity, survival and fulfillment."

Metal Hammer: How did you let him know that it was over?

Lars: "We talk on the phone a lot. That's the thing. I've said it many times: Bob has always been primarily a friend, and secondarily a producer. And that friendship hasn't suffered whatsoever."

Metal Hammer: In hiring Rubin, what were you hoping to achieve?

Lars: "To a certain extent, it was to do with wiping the slate clean when it came to the process of making records. I've known Rick for many years but we've never worked together. He brings a whole new energy and dynamic."

Metal Hammer: In keeping with the fact that you've been playing the title track of the "...And Justice for All" album again, Internet gossip suggests that some of these songs will be long ones.

Lars: "I wouldn't say that they're longer than the ones before. We've always written long songs. Most of the new ones clock between six and eight minutes. There's one that's five minutes. We're recording 14 and plan on finishing them all because we love them all. But only nine or ten will appear on the new record".

Metal Hammer: Kirk [Hammett] has said that although this is METALLICA's 11th studio album. It feels like the band's sixth. Does a part of you consider "St. Anger" was a mistake?

Lars: "Not at all. The mistake was the white leather jacket [worn in the drummer's infamous rock star phase, circa a stadiom tour with GUNS N' ROSES in 1992]. The Napster dispute wasn't a mistake, but it caught us off guard. The music has always been pure. It was the right thing to have done in 2003. That said, I listened to it a couple of months ago and it's a difficult record. I can hear that. But when I finished it, it made me do the same kind of backflips as all the other records."

Metal Hammer: You must've known that after the whole "Some Kind of Monster" thing, some people — including Kerry King [of SLAYER] who called you "fragile old men" — would never take the band seriously again.

Lars: "Oh listen, the reason we did that movie was to piss Kerry King off. Being the source of his amusement, that's great!"

Metal Hammer: As fascinating as it looked on screen, wouldn't it have been better to keep those things behind closed doors?

Lars: "There's certainly an argument for that. But right from day one, METALLICA has always been about the relationship with the fans. Unlike bands like LED ZEPPELIN who tried to keep things mystical, we've gone out of our way to be as accesible as possible. Our roots are alot more punk than that. 'Some Kind of Monster' was the logical conclusion of that mindset".

Metal Hammer: Then presumably you disagree with Kerry's ageist comments?

Lars: "Of course I do. If he hated 'Some Kind of Monster' that's the only stamp of approval that I need".

Metal Hammer: Nevertheless, "Some Kind of Monster" raised a lot of questions about your coheisiveness as a band. How are you all faring now?

Lars: "Of course, it asked some important questions. But you've got to remember that it was a moment in time from five years ago. Phil [Towle, therapist] is no longer around and we all get along. And mentioning Phil's name reminds me, he always used to tell us back then that the music we're making wouldn't shine through until the record after 'St. Anger'. I think he was right about that".

Metal Hammer: Not everyone approved of the new songs that you debuted earlier on the tour.

Lars: "Listen, what are we gonna do? Take a poll of the people that exit the venue? Stop playing them? I've just been on the METALLICA message board where a lot of moaning about all sorts of subjects goes on. But people are saying last night [Wembley stadium gig on July 8, 2007] was our best-ever appearance in the U.K."

Metal Hammer: Did the rumbling of fan discontent have anything to do with you dropping the new material out of the Wembley set?

Lars: "No, no...Not at all. We always try to play a different set every night. We played a new song in Donnington last year; we wanted to make the set as different as possible."

Metal Hammer: Do you consider this new album to be a thrash metal record?

Lars: "Oh [hang on] let me get my dictionary out...check my terminology."

Metal Hammer: Isn't that the record that the fans what you to make?

Lars: "I know that some of them do. But it's easier to tell you what it's not. It's not 'St. Anger' part two. This album has dynamics. It has slow bits; it has some very, very fast bits. It has melodic and very heavy bits. Rick is really focusing on James' vocals, but musically, it fucking rocks. So you might say that it falls into the category you just mentioned. But by the same token, anyone that follows this band will know, we always try to look forward and not back."

Metal Hammer: Does it feel like you owe anything to people who loved METALLICA in the early days but haven't liked too much of the band's music since the "Black Album?"

Lars: "Um, no. Not at all. I've a responsibility to my kids and to my lady to be a good partner. Also to myself, to create music that's honest, real and gets all three inches of my dick hard. Of course it's great to have as many people along for the ride as possibe. But when we put acoustic guitar into 'Fade To Black' 200 years ago, that's when the moaning started. We realized those people would always be around whatever we did. So, basically, we stopped trying to please them a long time ago."

Metal Hammer: When do you hope to release the album, and being touring properly?

Lars: "It'll be mixed by November and out in the new year. Maybe some time around February. In terms of playing live, we won't be quite as nutty as before. There won't be 39 dates in North Dakota. [laughs] I can't tell you that there will be an indoor arena tour in England. But things are going to be done in smaller increments. Instead of doing 14 arena gigs oveer 18 days, we'll do them in two legs of two weeks and then go home."

Metal Hammer: What you might call "doing less to do more?"

Lars: "Or taking longer to do the same. And that also applies to recording. People ask why it takes two years for METALLICA to make a record. We don't work 16-hour days in the studio for six days a week anymore. We work six-hour days in between dropping off our kids at school and picking them up again. The record still gets made, it just takes a bit longer."
